Sales Motivation: Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable?
Danita Bye
During these turbulent economic times you need to tap deep into your latent talents to find that competitive edge. To achieve this is going to ask of you to feel a bit (or a lot) uncomfortable. So, get comfortable being uncomfortable.
How do you do that? Stretch your comfort zone every day by doing something you thought was beyond your capabilities; it may mean talking to someone you feel uncomfortable with. When you feel your heart start to race, do it anyway. When your mouth goes dry, do it anyway. When you feel the heat and start sweating, do it anyway. In fact, see the heart-race-dry-mouth-sweating syndrome as a sign from God that you’re on the right path.
I used to put on my happy face and look confident. I’ve trained myself to do that-I hate being vulnerable, especially in a man’s world. And, I particularly hate crying in front of male clients! So, I’ve learned to keep the “I’m-together” mask on. The truth is—underneath the veneer, I’m a fraidy cat.
Deep inside, I’m repulsed by the thought that I’m letting fear rule my life. We all know the advice to “face the fear” and “kill the dragon within.” This sounds like good advice, but what does that look like on a daily basis?
I have developed these two disciplines, and they work for me. First, every morning as part of my morning routine, I review a card that says, “I thrive on being uncomfortable because that’s how I discover all my untapped giftedness and talent.” My natural tendency is to let fear rule, so I have this routine every day.
Sometimes, when I’m feeling too comfortable and not getting the results I think I’m capable of, I launch an attack campaign. I’ll track my level of uncomfortableness on a daily basis. I make a tick mark in my planner whenever I’ve done something that caused my heart to race or my pits to sweat.
Is Fear Keeping You From Your Best Sales Performance?
Fear is a very powerful emotion. Fear robs us of success. According to Ti Caine, life coach, we need to take our power back and the fear will go away. “In fact, our very deepest fear is that when we really reclaim our power and succeed, we have to face the knowledge that we have always been powerful to change all along and that we could have changed a year or five or 10 years ago.” Change comes from choice and we have always had that power.”
So, what is making you nervous and causes your heart to race? Is it a certain person? A specific situation? A certain conversation?
Whatever it is, do it! You’ll be impressed with what you’re able to accomplish. Plus, you’ll be sharpening your competitive edge by tapping your incredible talents.
“Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness which frightens us. We ask ourselves: Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, handsome, talented and fabulous?” Actually, who are you not to be?” - Nelson Mandela
